Frequent Asked Questions (FAQs)
What kinds of investigations are relevant in order to assess the conservation state of an art work?
It really depends on the context, but in general, very briefly:
– To identify the presence of retouchings, detachments, paint-overs and layers of varnish or waxes: Multilayer, (Multispectral) IR reflectography, UV fluorescence, UV reflectance;
– To deliver information about the structure of the artwork, its surface and on the way the support was realised: X radiography, Thermography, Raking Light photography, 3D relief;
– To have information about the materials used: XRays Fluorescence (XRF), and analyses on microsamples.
A larger or smaller set may be indicated for your specific case. We provide free quotations specific for each artwork.

Which sorts of investigations are recommended in order to assess a painting authenticity?
It very much depends on the supposed period and author, nevertheless the following investigations may be suggested: Xrays imaging to visualize the support and possible underpaintings, IR reflectography, to identify the execution techniques, the style of the underdrawing, and the possible location of signatures, words or dates.
UV Fluorescence imaging, in order to map the presence of different materials on the surface, which are later to be investigated with XRF or sampled and analysed with chemo-physical technique.

How much may your analyses cost?
The cost varies mainly with the artwork dimensions (since the time needed is generally proportional to them) and depending on where the object is located. We provide free quotations for each artwork.
How long does it take to have an investigation done?
The time needed varies principally depending on the size of the artwork. It is important to consider that after the acquisition time a post-processing stage is also needed. In general though it will not pass much more than a month before the complete result package can be in your hands. We apply extra costs when we are requested to deliver with urgency
Are your customers only large institutions or your services may be also useful to private small collectors?
Our services are intended for a wide range of clients, from large institutions to private collectors.
Do I have always to bring my art works to you to have them analysed?
Our device are portable, thus we would come to you if you would prefer this solution. Extra costs will be charged if we need to operate chez vous.
Do you need special conditions in order for the investigations to be carried on?
The only real need is that of having enough space in front of the artwork, this can be till 3m for large surfaces.
