The various
diagnostic services that we offer are based
on different physical principles and capture
different and often complementary information,
that often can to be joined together to draw
more informative results.
Multispectral analysis
These analyses are meant to automatically and
meaningfully combine different diagnostics modalities
and boost their possibilities for material detection,
classification, change detection, and unmixing.
We use custom algorithms, similar to the ones
common in e.g. remote sensing application. E.g.
we can jointly process the multispectral data
acquired in the visible, IR and Uv fluorescence
modes to locate and identify the different materials
on the painting.
Virtual restoration
We can provide a cluster of applications of
virtual restoration. In this field, different
methods have been studied, with various goals. The
current visual appearance of a painting may
be altered due to ageing or unfortunate events.
It is certainly questionable whether a real
conservation treatment should aim at bringing
the artwork back in time i.e. at the moment
in which the artist completed it. However, on
a virtual representation of the artwork, many
more options are possible. The craquelure removal
is, for example, a rather straightforward application,
which proved to improve the readability of the
image to a significant extend. Another possibility
in this direction is offered by the algorithms
for lacuna filling.
Virtual cleaning
More controversial has been the issue of virtual
cleaning. The varnish which is usually laid
over painting is easily altered by time, light
and environmental elements, generally becoming
less transparent and darker. The legibility
of the painting greatly suffers from it. Varnish
removal is a challenging task for a conservator,
and it is often debated how and even whether
to proceed.Virtual cleaning intends to help
in taking such a decision, showing images of
several hypothetical procedures.
